The city of Houston honored Jeffrey Sachs on Tuesday proclaiming May 27, 2014 as “Dr. Jeffrey Sachs Day” for his work in the field of sustainable development. Sachs was recognized for helping to establish one of the first doctoral programs in Sustainable Development, contributing to policies and academic work addressing climate change, and for his service as director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. The announcement came shortly before Sachs gave a commencement speech at Baylor University. Houston, also known as the “energy capital of the world” commended Sachs for his visionary leadership and helping to promote sustainable environmental practices. The Columbia University Club of South Texas organized a luncheon attended by 130 people where the Proclamation was presented.
