Joanna Rubinstein, Director of the Earth Institute’s Center for Global Health and Economic Development (CGHED), was a recent guest of The Kojo Nmadi Radio Show on WAMU 88.5, an NPR affiliate. The program was broadcast from the InterAction 2010 Forum, a dialogue for international relief and development advocacy, in Washington, DC, where Rubinstein was in attendance.
The radio address, entitled, “Millennium Development Goals: 2015 & Beyond,” featured Rubinstein and three other experts: Gloria Ekpo, HIV & AIDS Specialist, World Vision; Mark Green, Director, Malaria No More Policy Center; and Sering Falu Njie, Deputy Director for Policy, United Nations Millennium Campaign.
During the program Rubinstein highlighted the importance of the Earth Institute’s Millennium Villages Project as “a proof of concept that the MDGs can actually be achieved if you have an integrated approach and if you work directly with local communities.”
She noted the importance of using the MDG framework because it has inspired governments to make similar investments for their people. For example, Nigeria is using its debt relief money to invest in MDG scale up of health and education, and Mali is also financing its own scale up program.
