Plastics are versatile, synthetic materials made from polymers that have become essential in modern life, and are used in everything from packaging to electronics. However, their durability and widespread use have led to significant environmental challenges. Most plastics are derived from fossil fuels and are not biodegradable, contributing to long-lasting pollution in oceans, rivers and ecosystems. Plastic waste, especially microplastics, poses risks to wildlife and human health. Current scientific research focuses on developing biodegradable alternatives, improving recycling methods and reducing plastic production. Addressing the plastic crisis requires a global effort to transition toward more sustainable materials and waste management systems.
