On Monday, May 20, students in the MS in Sustainability Management program kicked off their graduation festivities at the Diana Center at Barnard College to honor of this year’s graduates. Around 200 people attended the cocktail hour to celebrate the graduates’ accomplishments, including the family, friends and faculty of current and graduating students.

“Celebrating graduation with my fellow classmates is a wonderful way to acknowledge this great accomplishment,” graduate Davida Heller said. “It’s exciting to be going out into the world with this degree among such an incredible community.”

Graduating students were recognized at the School of Continuing Education Class Day Ceremony on May 21. In addition to the 49 students who completed their degree requirements for the May 2013 commencement exercises, the ceremony also honored program graduates from October 2012 and February 2013. Degrees were officially conferred to the graduates on May 22 at the Columbia University-wide ceremony.

“I am proud of the achievements of the newest graduates of the M.S. in Sustainability Management program, and look forward to staying in touch with them as we work together build the new profession of sustainability management,” said Steve Cohen, the program’s founder and director. “The program includes a very diverse array of part- and full-time students, most from the New York region but many from every corner of the globe. I am confident that these talented and dedicated students will become the innovate sustainability professionals we need in order to solve the planet’s most pressing environmental problems.”

The M.S. in Sustainability Management, co-sponsored by the Earth Institute and Columbia’s School of Continuing Education, trains students to tackle complex and pressing environmental and managerial challenges. The program requires the successful completion of 36 credit points. Those credit points are divided among five comprehensive content areas: integrative sustainability management, economics and quantitative analysis, the physical dimensions of sustainability, the public policy environment of sustainability management, and general and financial management.
