MS in Sustainability Management Welcomes a New Cohort

On Tuesday, January 10, the Master of Science in Sustainability Management program hosted an orientation to welcome its newest cohort of students. 36 students representing a diverse array of academic and professional backgrounds attended the event. The orientation, which covered topics including curriculum, course planning, advising and career services, was well received by the new students who were just as excited to learn about each other as they were to begin their studies.

Tobi Petrocelli, an incoming Sustainability Management student was thrilled with the diversity of the incoming students’ past experiences, noting that “it was a room full of very dynamic professionals from a wide scope of the globe, each passionate about the progression of sustainability. I welcome the challenges, the inspiration and the community interaction I’m about to embark on at Columbia.”

Steve Cohen, the Program Director, reviewed the degree’s intended vision, purpose and curriculum, while Program Manager, Allison Ladue, tackled student questions pertaining to course planning and program support. Davida Heller, a current program candidate as well as the program’s Corporate Relations Manager, discussed the opportunities for students with regard to networking and career planning.

After the presentations, the students socialized with the other members of the cohort and met the program’s faculty and staff. Professor Satyajit Bose was impressed with the newcomers, commenting on how “the extraordinary diversity of backgrounds and deep expertise of the incoming class should provide for many engaging discussions this semester.”

The MS in Sustainability Management, co-sponsored by the Earth Institute and Columbia’s School of Continuing Education, trains students to tackle complex and pressing environmental and managerial challenges. The M.S.in Sustainability Management program requires the successful completion of 36 credit points. Those credit points are divided among five comprehensive content areas: integrative sustainability management, economics and quantitative analysis, the physical dimensions of sustainability, the public policy environment of sustainability management, and general and financial management. AGU25, the premier Earth and space science conference, takes place December 15-19, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s theme—Where Science Connects Us—puts in focus how science depends on connection, from the lab to the field to the ballot box. Once again, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia Climate School scientists, experts, students, and educators are playing an active role, sharing our research and helping shape the future of our planet. #AGU25 Learn More
