Recognized as a 40 Under 40 Rising Star on the Albany 2016 list, Gabriel Cowles, Masters in Public Administration Environmental Science and Policy alumnus (2009), is the program manager for Build Smart NY, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s initiative to improve energy efficiency in state facilities by 20 percent by 2020. In just the first year, state agencies improved their energy efficiency by nearly 5 percent, almost a quarter of the program’s 2020 goal.

Prior to his new position, at Willdan Energy Solutions, Cowles served as senior program manager for Con Edison’s Small Business Direct Installation program, one of the largest energy efficiency programs in the country. Cowles surpassed the program goals by 80 percent, two months ahead of schedule and approximately $2 million under budget.

Gabe reflected on the benefits of attending the MPA-ESP program and how it prepared him for his career. From communicating scientific and technical information to diverse stakeholders, to networking with other ESP alumni here in New York, for Cowles the program was the “best investment in my career to date.”
