Earth Institute Travel Grant Program
The Earth Institute Travel Grant Program makes it possible for Columbia University students to work on a variety of sustainable development and environmental projects nationally and internationally. Research must be affiliated with projects for which students will receive academic credit towards their degree programs at Columbia University. Individual students may apply for up to $750 in funding and groups may apply for up to $2,000 (groups should submit one application; there are no restrictions on the number of students per group). All students who receive funding are required to participate in the Student Research Showcase, which is hosted by the Earth Institute in the spring. Current Columbia University undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students pursuing research related to sustainability and the environment are eligible to apply. Applications are only accepted for future travel.

Global Fellows in Sustainable Development Program
The Denning Global Fellows in Sustainable Development Program supports field research for current Columbia undergraduates studying sustainable development. This field research may take the form of actual fieldwork, unpaid research assistantships, select study abroad opportunities, theses, senior seminar projects, or independent studies. Funding will only be awarded for activities that explicitly fulfill degree requirements, and/or further an individual’s studies in sustainable development. Awards will vary in amount according to individual project needs. Current full-time Columbia students in the Undergraduate Program in Sustainable Development are eligible, provided they are in good academic standing. All students who receive funding are required to participate in the Student Research Showcase, which is hosted by the Earth Institute in the spring. Learn more about previous Global Fellows here.

Conference Funding for Sustainable Development Students
Students are encouraged to attend sustainability-focused conferences during their time at Columbia as another way to expand their practice-based experience. The program offers financial support to students for conference-related activities, including but not limited to: presenting research (in a talk or poster session), participating in workshops, and attending seminars. Students are required to submit an itemized budget with their application. Awards will vary in amount according to individual travel needs. All students who receive funding are required to participate in the Student Research Showcase, which is hosted by the Earth Institute in the spring. The application deadline is rolling September 1 – May 1, but must be submitted at least four weeks before the departure date. Application is available here.
