Sustainability Students Awarded SPS Student Leadership Honors

The Office of Student Affairs hosted the School of Professional Studies Student Leadership Banquet on May 2, 2017. SPS Dean, Jason Wingard and Associate Dean of Student Affairs, Tatum Soo Kim presented awards for student groups and leaders for the advancement of the student life experience at SPS.

SPS Student Leadership Award
Winner: Dazzle Bhujwala – Columbia Sustainable Finance Professionals Network (CSFPN)

This award is presented to the student leader who exhibited quality leadership within their student organization during the 2016-2017 academic year. Dazzle recieved this award for his role in launching and leading the Columbia Sustainable Finance Professionals Network. Dazzle has exceeded the expectations of a student leader and put forth an exceptional amount of effort to contribute to the student life experience and build the SPS community. CSFPN has helped to provide invaluable access to leading practitioners in the sustainable finance community for members of the Sustainability Management and SPS community.

SPS Student Program Innovation Award
Winner: SUMASA – Jordan Chan, Modou Cham, Hilary Osborn, Cheryl Poccia, Amanda Stevens, Michael Jorsich, Leticia Neves, and Lindsay Ferzoco

This award is presented to the program or event that innovatively impacted the student life experience within the SPS community during the 2016-2017 academic year. The Sustainability Management Student Association (SUMASA) was awarded this honor for the annual Sustainable Perspectives Symposium. Over 150 members of the Columbia and Greater NYC Sustainability communities came together at the Sustainability Management Student Association’s 6th annual Sustainable Perspective Symposium to hear speakers from diverse professional backgrounds discuss this year’s topic: Impacting Behavior for a Sustainable Society. In addition, over 500 virtual attendees viewed the live streaming of Impacting Behavior’s four sessions online and followed the conversations on social media through #SUMAspeaks17.Attendees walked away with important takeaways around sustainability and behavior.

SPS Student Organization of the Year Award
Winner: Sustainability Management Studen Association (SUMASA) – Jordan Chan, Modou Cham, Hilary Osborn, Cheryl Poccia, Amanda Stevens, Michael Jorisch, Leticia Neves Valadez, and Lindsay Ferzoco

This award is presented to the student organization with measurably the strongest overall impact on the student experience within the SPS community during the 2016-2017 academic year. SUMASA embodied the SPS Office of Student of Life’s co-curricular approach to developing programs that focus on academic and professional development, enhanced the SPS student experience, and strived towards furthering a sense of community at Columbia SPS.

The M.S. in Sustainability Management, co-sponsored by the Earth Institute and Columbia’s School of Professional Studies, trains students to tackle complex and pressing environmental and managerial challenges. The program requires the successful completion of 36 credit points. Those credit points are divided among five comprehensive content areas: integrative sustainability management, economics and quantitative analysis, the physical dimensions of sustainability, the public policy environment of sustainability management, and general and financial management.
