Science for the Planet: Creating Climate Solutions with Urban Communities

As climate change accelerates, cities are on the front lines, both in experiencing its impacts and in crafting solutions. Sheila Foster works to ensure urban climate adaptation strategies are not only effective but equitable. Her research focuses on environmental and climate equity, with an emphasis on co-creating solutions with frontline communities.

“Often the people who live in these communities have already been working on solutions,” says Foster, a professor at the Columbia Climate School. “What they need are tools—legal, policy and institutional—to scale those solutions in partnership with government.”

This video is part of the ongoing Science for the Planet explainer series about how Columbia Climate School scientists and scholars are trying to understand the effects of climate change and helping to contribute solutions.
