Columbia Law School Launches New Podcast Series on Climate Change and the Law

defending the planet logoDefending the Planet is a new limited podcast series from Columbia Law School that will explore the critical role law and lawyers play in confronting the global climate crisis.

Hosted by Michael Gerrard, Andrew Sabin Professor of Professional Practice and the founder and faculty director of the Law School’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law, the series will share bold legal strategies to address pressing issues including the Biden climate policy agenda, the United States’ reentry into the Paris agreement, climate refugees, the environmental justice movement, and more.

The series kicks off this week with an introductory conversation between Gerrard and award-winning science journalist Andrew Revkin, director of the Initiative on Communication and Sustainability at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. They’re joined by a 2021 graduate who is committed to using the law to fight climate change.

Defending the Planet is Columbia Law School’s second podcast series. It follows the Law School’s Beyond “Unprecedented”: The Post-Pandemic Economy, a six-episode series that featured Columbia Law faculty and alumni discussing strategies and solutions for the pandemic-related challenges facing small businesses, essential workers, corporate boards, and financial institutions. It was selected as an honoree in this year’s Webby Awards.

AGU25, the premier Earth and space science conference, takes place December 15-19, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s theme—Where Science Connects Us—puts in focus how science depends on connection, from the lab to the field to the ballot box. Once again, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia Climate School scientists, experts, students, and educators are playing an active role, sharing our research and helping shape the future of our planet. #AGU25 Learn More
