Lessening the Impacts of Climate Shocks to Agriculture

In this video, Lisa Goddard, the director of the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), discusses two innovations IRI has helped develop to reduce the potential impacts of droughts and extreme weather on vulnerable communities around the world: climate-based index insurance for smallholder farmers in Africa and forecast-based financing for the World Food Programme.

Goddard is in Washington, D.C. this week for the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union (#AGU2018). Visit IRI’s full schedule of AGU activities to discover more talks and presentations.

AGU25, the premier Earth and space science conference, takes place December 15-19, 2025 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year’s theme—Where Science Connects Us—puts in focus how science depends on connection, from the lab to the field to the ballot box. Once again, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and Columbia Climate School scientists, experts, students, and educators are playing an active role, sharing our research and helping shape the future of our planet. #AGU25 Learn More
