The Columbia Climate School is pleased to welcome Garrett Albistegui Adler as lecturer in the Discipline of Climate.
Albistegui Adler is an interdisciplinary environmental social scientist whose research examines the political and social impacts of climate change and climate variability. His research focuses on understanding, testing and ultimately preventing the links between climate stress and violent conflict.
Albistegui Adler earned his PhD from Stanford University’s Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources in 2022. After completing his doctorate, he held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. Most recently, he served as a term lecturer at Barnard College during the 2025-26 academic year.
Before pursuing graduate study, Albistegui Adler spent six years teaching middle and high school science. That experience continues to shape his approach to teaching, education and mentorship.
“Garrett brings an impressive combination of scholarly rigor, interdisciplinary thinking and a deep commitment to education,” said Alexis Abramson, dean of the Columbia Climate School. “His expertise at the intersection of climate and society will only strengthen our teaching and research community.”
Albistegui Adler’s appointment comes as the Climate School continues to expand its faculty and strengthen its commitment to advancing research and education on climate change and its impacts. His work on the links between climate, conflict and society adds to the school’s interdisciplinary approach to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
