Adjunct professor Shaun Hoyte is a sustainability professional focused on addressing climate-related risks and identifying the impacts and opportunities they create for our communities. Based in New York City, Hoyte brings over 15 years of experience in the energy and utility sector and combines practical, hands-on industry knowledge with technical expertise to design energy efficiency programs that maximize revenue and advance an equitable clean energy economy.
In recognition of his diverse market knowledge and exemplary performance, Hoyte was named as Con Edison’s honoree for the 2022 Harlem YMCA Achievers in Industry Award. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business from Manhattan College, where he graduated with honors. Hoyte earned his master’s degree in Sustainability Management from Columbia University, where he continues to be an active member of the community. He is a member of the board of directors of the Columbia Alumni Association, member of the Sustainability Management Advisory Board, and is the vice-chair of the Alumni Advisory Board of the School of Professional Studies, where he was the recipient of the 2020 Alumni Dean’s Excellence Award.
What initially motivated you to pursue the field of sustainability?
There’s so much to learn and the field of sustainability continues to evolve at a rapid pace. I wanted to pursue a career that rewarded my curiosity while allowing me to have an immediate positive impact on the protection of our planet.
What initially drew you to the Sustainability Management program?
I was looking for an interdisciplinary program that would equip me with the necessary tools and resources to tackle some of the world’s most complex problems. The flexibility to choose courses that align with my interests while learning from top industry experts and professors led me here.
What course will you be teaching this fall and what excites you most about it?
I will be teaching in the Integrated Capstone Workshop this fall. I’m excited to work with the client and students to create meaningful solutions for real-world challenges impacting people and the environment.
What changes do you hope to see in the field of sustainability in the future?
I hope to see the field of sustainability push the boundaries of what’s possible to ensure the wellbeing of the present and future generations. The investigation of bold and disruptive solutions that interface with existing natural resources and societies can orchestrate a more sustainable ecosystem. Sustainability should no longer be viewed as a nicety for businesses — it’s a necessity.
What advice do you have for students pursuing a career in sustainability?
As much as sustainability is a business case, it’s also a lifestyle — embrace it! Be open to exploring fresh new ideas, making small changes to your lifestyle, connecting with talented new people, and leaning on the industry as a collective resource for comprehensive solutions. The opportunities in this field are endless, and the mission is more important now than ever before.
