Join us at Open House on Saturday, Oct. 17 to explore the world-class research facilities at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY, just outside of New York City.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Lamont will open its doors to the public for this exciting day of science and discovery. The free, family-friendly celebration will feature scientists from Lamont sharing their work via lab tours, talks and hands-on programs that are educational, interactive and fun for all ages!
There will be something for everyone, from elementary school-age children—there will be an Open House quiz that kids can complete for an onsite prize—to college students to those well versed in the field. The exhibits will feature new developments in the Earth sciences as well as the ongoing research that helps preserve our planet’s future. Accompanying these exhibits will be lectures on topics like this historic El Niño year, NYC’s congestion pricing and the impact of AI on science. (Lectures at Monell Auditorium will be webcast here.)

Take a peek at some of our past years’ activities and learn more about this year’s exhibits, tours and lectures. Here are some highlights:
- Create your own volcanic eruptions and witness an annual favorite: the exploding trash-can volcano.
- View actual rocks from the moon!
- Test your soil and paint for lead with Lamont geochemist Lex van Geen and his students. Here’s how to collect your samples.
- Get your hands into the polar regions with glacier goo.
- See how a bathtub full of cornstarch and water can be used to understand the dynamics of our planet.
Lamont Open House is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $25. Register here.
FREE shuttle buses depart for the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus and return to Columbia University’s Morningside campus in Manhattan throughout the day. See location and schedules details.
