Fia Hoque is currently pursuing a master’s degree in the Sustainability Science (SUSC) program. Born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh, she moved to the U.S. in 2016 to complete her bachelor’s in chemistry from the University of Washington. She is specifically interested in data analysis and management with the ultimate goal of helping companies and non-profits adapt to more sustainable practices and engaging in global climate change.

Aside from academics, Fia loves traveling and has been to over 20 countries. In her free time, she loves hiking, trying new foods, and exploring all forms of music and art.

What drew you to apply to the SUSC program?

This program has the perfect blend of scientific innovation, technical skills, and hands-on curriculum that is necessary to become a sustainability professional—my ideal career. Some of the major factors that attracted me to the SUSC program were the cutting-edge scientific methods and tools, the application of interdisciplinary scientific research and integrative education style, and an environment that includes a network of diverse professionals.

What are some of the highlights from your time in the SUSC program?

In addition to my classes, I joined the Resiliency Science Union of Excellence (R.E.S.C.U.E.) club at Columbia University where I met some great people and had some amazing experiences!

What are some of your favorite courses or professors so far?

SUSC PS5130 Improving Health through Environmental Measurements in Water and Soil taught by Dr. Lex van Geen.

What are some of your career aspirations? How has being a part of the Sustainability Science program affected those aspirations?

I aspire to be a sustainability professional. I wish to apply new technology and scientific methods to mitigate and monitor climate impacts around the world. I want to help both private and public companies implement more sustainable solutions.
